Do Slough Businesses Actually Need a Local Accountant?
Rob Young
We're going to say something upfront that most firms writing a 'we serve your town' page won't: Love Your Accountants isn't based in Slough, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What we do have is a genuine reason for writing this, which is that Slough's business rates relief scheme is under active review right now, and that's worth knowing about whether your accountant is five minutes away or fifty miles away.
What's actually happening with business rates relief in Slough right now?
Slough Borough Council is currently reviewing every property claiming small business rate relief, and it's asking recipients to complete an online update form confirming their details are still correct. The council has given a 14 day window to respond. Miss that window and you risk losing relief you're otherwise entitled to, not because your business has changed, but because a form didn't get filled in on time. If you run a business from a property in Slough and claim this relief, it's worth checking your inbox and your council correspondence for this now rather than finding out about it from a backdated bill.
This kind of review isn't unique to Slough, but it lands differently there. Slough Borough Council issued a Section 114 notice back in 2021, effectively declaring itself unable to balance its budget, and it's still working through a multi-year recovery plan with a stated savings target running into the tens of millions. A council under that kind of financial pressure has every incentive to tighten up who's actually eligible for relief, so a review landing now isn't a coincidence worth ignoring.
How does small business rate relief actually work, wherever you're based?
The underlying rules are set nationally, not by Slough specifically. If your property's rateable value is £12,000 or below, you may be entitled to 100% relief, meaning no business rates at all. Between £12,001 and £15,000, relief tapers down gradually from 100% to zero rather than dropping off a cliff at either end. Above £15,000 you don't qualify for small business rate relief itself, though you may still benefit from the small business multiplier rather than the standard one, provided your rateable value stays under £51,000. Councils administer the scheme and run the eligibility checks, like the one happening in Slough now, but the thresholds themselves come from central government and apply the same way everywhere.
What does Slough's business landscape actually look like?
It's genuinely one of the more distinctive local economies in the country, and worth understanding on its own terms rather than assuming it's a generic commuter town. Slough is reported to be the UK's most productive urban area by output per worker, ahead even of London on that specific measure, largely on the back of the Slough Trading Estate, the largest industrial estate in single private ownership in Europe, home to more than 400 businesses and upwards of 17,000 jobs. Add in Mars, which has operated there since 1932, along with major sites for names like McAfee, BlackBerry and Telefonica, and Slough has one of the highest concentrations of UK company headquarters outside London itself.
What that means in practice is that Slough's smaller businesses often sit in the shadow of genuinely large neighbours, supplying, servicing or spinning out of the bigger names around them, rather than existing in a town built primarily around independent small business the way somewhere like Guildford or Kingston might feel. Being close to Heathrow and well connected by Crossrail adds another layer: a fair number of Slough businesses are logistics, distribution or services businesses trading well beyond the town itself, which changes what actually matters when it comes to picking financial support.
Do you actually need a Slough-based accountant, or just a good one?
This is the honest answer, not the sales pitch: for the vast majority of what a small business actually needs from an accountant, being local to your postcode has very little to do with the quality of the advice or the strength of the relationship. Bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, annual accounts and tax planning are all done through cloud software and video calls these days almost everywhere, LYA included, and a business two junctions down the M4 or two hours away gets the same service either way.
What actually matters is whether your accountant genuinely understands your numbers and picks up the phone when something looks off, not whether they could walk to your office. We work with clients across the country this way already, and we'd rather be straightforward about that than dress up a page as a local presence we don't have. If a warehousing, logistics or professional services business in or around Slough wants an accountant who treats fixed fees, a dedicated contact and a genuine relationship as the actual differentiator instead of a shopfront, that's a conversation worth having regardless of postcode.

Frequently asked questions
Does Love Your Accountants have an office in Slough?
No. LYA is based in Epsom, Surrey, and works with clients across the country remotely through Xero and video calls. We're not claiming a Slough presence we don't have, and we think that's a more honest starting point than pretending otherwise.
What happens if I miss Slough Borough Council's rate relief review deadline?
You risk having your small business rate relief removed or reassessed, which could mean a higher rates bill from that point, even if nothing about your business has actually changed. It's worth responding to the council's request within the window given rather than assuming it will sort itself out.
Is small business rate relief different in Slough compared to elsewhere in England?
No. The relief thresholds themselves are set nationally. What can differ locally is how actively a council reviews and enforces eligibility, and Slough's current review is a good example of that happening more actively than usual given the council's own financial pressures.
